Description

Lead contamination is widespread in the San Francisco Bay Area—a lasting legacy of leaded gasoline and paint that continues to impact our indoor and outdoor spaces. Because lead doesn’t degrade, it remains in our environment, posing ongoing health risks, especially in areas with historical exposure. In this session you will:
  • • Collect original soil samples,
  • • Analyze them using advanced scientific equipment,
  • • Generate and interpret data,
  • • Summarize findings in a one-page scientific report,
  • • Expand a community resource, The Lead Map.

Throughout the week, we’ll explore the history of environmental justice and redlining and how these legacies influence current environmental hazards in our communities.

Participants must be in grade 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 or 12 on the date the program begins.
